The world’s largest piping festival kicked aff in Glasgow on Saturday, wi a programme o musical events running until Sunday 14th August.
This year’s Piping Live! will showcase world-class performances, music sessions, recitals, talks, competitions, book launches, workshops an much mair.
This is the 19th year the festival has been held, wi the eight days o events expected tae welcome oer 30,000 attendees tae Glasgow.
The two day World Pipe Band Championships will also return tae Glasgow Green on Friday 12th August, where thousands o pipers an drummers fae 10 countries will battle it oot tae determine which band is the best.
Piping Live!’s Artistic Director an Director o the Piping at the National Piping Centre, Finlay MacDonald said: “We’ve got such an incredible week of piping events on throughout the week for the return of Piping Live!.”
“There really is something for everyone and we would encourage people to come along and celebrate the very best of Scottish music and culture.”
Musicians fae Scotland’s thriving folk an piping scenes will feature at the festival, wi RURA, Ross Ainslie an the BBC award winning Brìghde Chaimbeul, aa performin at the Old Fruitmarket.
They will also be jined bi acts fae the international piping community, wi the first Iranian professional piper, Liana Sharifian performing wi her father, Mohsen Sharifian an Habib Meftah.
This alongside performances fae the Estonian Est Pipes, Uilleann Piper Leonard Barry an Hungarian duo Balázs Istvánfi & András Németh.
The Big Band kicked aff proceedings at the festival on Saturday, wi aroon 150 pipers an drummers participatin in a march through the city centre, playin a wide selection o tunes for the first time in three years.
As leader o the Big Band as weel, Finlay MacDonald added: “The Big Band parade is always a highlight of the festival, and I’ve missed it greatly these last two years.”
“Performing with a 150-strong pipe band in one of Scotland’s most famous and celebrated cities is an experience unlike any other, and it’s made all the better knowing we are raising money for an amazing charity like Beatson Cancer Charity too.”
